If you’re heading out to dinner at a fancy restaurant, you can sometimes be left with sticker shock at the price of an ordinary glass of wine. Often times, even a single glass can run you as much as an entire entree. Upwards of $200 for a bottle of wine, however, is nothing when you consider the following wines and what they fetched at auction.
The first specimen is from the Screaming Eagle vineyard. The bottles were from 1992, and they were featured in a 2008 auction sponsored in the Napa Valley. The lot contained eight magnums, and the final bid came to an incredible $500,000 for everything.
Believe it or not, that price is nothing compared to the 1945 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild Jeroboam. It was put up for auction at the renowned Christie’s auction house in 1997. The buyer remained anonymous, but what is known is that he paid an astounding $114, 614 for a single bottle. It might seem crazy to pay as much for a bottle of wine as a condo, but it is considered one of the very finest bottles of wine in the world.
An even higher ticket item was the 1787 Chateau Lafitte. Although it couldn’t be substantiated at the time of sale, this bottle of wine was widely believed to belong to former US president Thomas Jefferson. Lending credence to the claims, the bottle itself was etched with the initials “Th.J.” By virtue of the incredible nature of the wine and the potentially incredible nature of the former owner, this bottle went for $160,000. Jefferson’s ownership of the wine, however, was later found to be (in all likelihood) false.
Still, nothing can top this final specimen of wine. Its final price tag is as astounding as its history. The wine is a 1907 Heidsieck. The champagne (from the noted Champagne region in France) was originally shipped to the Russian family in 1916. The ship containing the wine, however, was lost at sea. Its contents weren’t discovered until divers uncovered the shipwreck in 1997. The bottles were then sold off individually to wealthy wine collectors for the hefty sum of $275,000 per bottle.
So the next time you balk at restaurant prices for a simple glass of house red, just remember it could be a lot worse!
