Malen nach Zahlen eigenes foto Some were found in the cellar of Karnsow Castle north-west of Bremen, others in an American art preservation officer’s trunk. Another, a painting by Bosch, was recovered from Shaft 8 of the Stassfurt salt works.
On 9 May 1946, ninety-five museum directors and academics asked President Truman to have the paintings returned immediately to Germany. But Congress blocked this. So the 200 pictures, which include Baldung’s “Priam’s Treasure”, the Schliemann gold treasury and a 1646 Charter of Freedom from Bremen’s municipal archives, were put on show in Washington.
