Apple is going to tighten the screws on apps that track your behavior with iOS 15. It has a new privacy feature called App Privacy Report.
This new feature gives you a visual report of the data your apps have accessed over the last seven days. It includes info on 1) Data & Sensor Access and 2) App Network Activity and Website Network Activity.
Location
Last December, Apple introduced a new feature called App Privacy Report in iOS 15 to give you more visibility into how apps use your data. It shows you what permissions an app has requested and when they were granted, so you can see if any are unnecessary. It also allows you to disable the apps’ access to sensitive information, like photos, contacts, local network access in iOS, camera, microphone, and location.
The App Privacy Report is located in Settings and can be found under the “Privacy” category. Once you enable it, the feature will start gathering data and may take some time to show up in the report. If you want to clear all the collected data, just go to Settings > Privacy and tap “App Privacy Report”.
You can view your app’s location history by heading into your App Privacy Report and tapping on Significant Locations (formerly known as Frequent Locations). This will display your location history with location names and dates. However, if you don’t want to see the locations of your trips, you can turn it off by using the toggle switch on the bottom of the screen.
The Data & Sensor Access section will provide you with information about what types of data and device sensors an app has requested or used in the past 7 days. This includes info about an app’s activity, its location, a summary of how the app has used your iPhone’s GPS, and whether it has used gyroscope or accelerometer. This data is encrypted and stored locally on your device, so it’s not accessible by anyone on iCloud or via another device. If you decide to disable this feature, make sure that you’ve already disabled “Prevent cross-site tracking” in Safari on your iPhone or Mac.
Photos
Your photos and videos are precious, and you wouldn’t want them to fall into the wrong hands. Thankfully, Apple’s recently introduced App Privacy Report lets you see who has access to what areas of your phone. In this week’s Tech Tip, Curtis Hyde shows you how to get started with this feature in iOS 15. This feature may take a little time to start collecting information as it starts to work. Once you turn it on, though, it’ll be easy to spot data-hungry apps and revoke their permissions accordingly. Apple’s new App Privacy Report is available in Settings —> General —> App Privacy.
Camera
If you’re concerned about app privacy, you can easily check your device’s privacy settings on a per-app basis with iOS 15. Apple’s built-in “App Privacy Report” gives users visibility into which apps are accessing sensitive information like location, photos, camera, microphone, and other data. You can also control and change permissions on a per-app basis, though it’s important to note that some apps may need specific functions to operate properly.
The App Privacy Report feature is a huge step in Apple’s dedication to online privacy. Previously, it was nearly impossible to tell which apps were tracking you and using your personal data. Apple’s solution is a handy new tool that provides a 7-day snapshot of which apps are accessing data, like your location. And with Apple’s latest update, App Privacy Report now includes information about domains that have been contacted by your apps or content within those apps.
To enable the feature, open your Settings app and head to Privacy. Select “App Privacy Report” from the menu and tap the toggle button to turn it on. Once it’s turned on, your device will begin recording app activity, and the App Privacy Report screen will be populated with data for the next 7 days.
While this is a great way to see which apps are accessing your private information, it’s worth noting that the feature only works when your device is in range of a Wi-Fi network. It’s also not a complete list of all the apps that have ever accessed your personal information, so you might still want to keep an eye on your security. And if you have any concerns about an app’s behavior, you can always contact the developer directly to request more information or disable its tracking altogether.
Microphone
Last December, Apple introduced a new feature to help you protect your privacy. Its App Privacy Report is designed to help you see how apps are using data like your location, photos, camera, microphone, and other sensors. It also tells you when an app is accessing areas of your phone that it doesn’t need to use, such as your email or your contacts. In today’s Tuesday Tech Tip, we’ll show you how to get started with this new feature.
You can activate this feature in the Settings app by tapping Privacy and then turning on App Privacy Report. Then, you’ll see a list of apps with details on how and when they’re using your data. The list includes both recent and historical activity, and it’s easy to see how much of your privacy is being used by a specific app.
The feature also provides visibility into app network activity and website network activity, as well as the most-contacted domains for each app. That’s especially useful for discovering how your information may be shared, and it gives you the power to update app permissions or revoke them. The App Privacy Report feature is only available on devices running iOS 15.2 and later, and it’s not enabled by default.
You can disable this feature in the Settings app by tapping Privacy again and then deleting your report. All of the data in the App Privacy Report is encrypted and only stored on your device, and you can clear it at any time. If you do decide to turn off the feature, it’s a good idea to review your privacy settings to make sure nothing unexpected is happening.
Contacts
A lot of us take our privacy seriously, and rightly so. If you want to protect your personal information and data, you need to be vigilant about which apps are accessing which areas of your device. In today’s Tuesday Tech Tip video, Curtis Hyde shows you how to check your iPhone’s App Privacy Report, which gives you an overview of how many different apps are accessing various areas of your device.
If you’re looking for more in-depth details, the Settings app also has a Privacy pane with separate sections for Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Bluetooth, Health, Files and Folders, and System. These sections allow you to see the apps that are accessing each of these categories and give you the option to prevent them from doing so.
Apple has instituted a number of measures against app developers that play fast and loose with your data, including a new privacy report that lets you track the way your apps access, disseminate, and process your info. This is a great step towards strengthening your smartphone and tablet security plus privacy.
You can view your App Privacy Report at any time by going to Settings Privacy and tapping App Privacy Report. The report will only start collecting data after you turn it on, so it may take a little while for the first reports to appear. The two most important sections are Data & Sensor Access and Network Activity, which show the various apps’ data usage over the past seven days. You can also view the Most Contacted Domains section, which shows a list of domains that all apps have contacted (including those that use private browsing mode) in the past seven days.
